Contouring For Dummies

I have a weird relationship with contouring.

Once upon a time, back when I religiously used my Naked 2 Palette and changed my lipstick every single day, I had a really nice powder contour trio from Ulta (which I paid $5 for when it was on super sale), and it made me look like a super hottie (compared to my normal, bland, contourless self). I started dating my ex, and when contouring BLEW TF UP, I decided to contour ten times harder…and I remember going to the suburbs to visit my parents, and having my mom rub my face, and ask, “Why is your face so dirty? It looks so muddy.”

I toned it down after that.

After my devastating (to some. I admit I am in that category of some), a lot of stuff fell out of my makeup routine. Although later I amped things up, because I was now a magical and mystical ~.:single girl:.~, somehow contouring got lost in the mix. I was trying a bunch of new products, and as I started to grow up and move past that rough (AF) transition, I discovered a lot about myself. Not just in makeup things, but in all aspects of my life! That was when I discovered my love of cream face products, and cheek stain, and how flattering I looked in the color green.

Anyways, I wanted to get into contouring again. I asked one of my best friends what they thought, and well..

I can take a hint.

I ended up ordering the Milk Makeup Bronzer Stick, on an impulsive buy…but could not stop thinking about how it was $24 for that stick.

Surely, there had to be a dupe.

Well..there wasn’t. But then, @jackieoproblems mentioned the NYX Wonder Stick , and it is amazing.

(PS I wear medium! I am a NC20).

It isn’t too warm, it’s buildable, and blends EFFORTLESSLY. I will admit that the lighter side annoyed me a tad, because it kinda broke off, but I’ll forgive it.

Me, thinking that I am Karley Sciortino.

(Sorry for the weird lighting, it was 12 am but I was SOOOO EXCITED that my contour turned out well, that I had to take a picture!)

I apply the bronzer under my cheekbones, on my forehead’s outsideish part, kinda on temples. I apply the white chalk/highlighter stuff under my eye, on my forehead, down the bridge of my nose. And then I apply my usual highlighter, and BLENDDD.

The craziest thing about all of this though…I use a brush.

I’m sorry.

I know, I know, I know.

just told all of you yesterday that I loved using my hands, but the Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush (bought on super sale), is just the most amazing brush I’ve ever used in my life. It’s so damn fluffy and soft! And blends without streaking!

BUT I still apply everything else with my hands–just not the NYX Wonder Stick.

Someone call foul if I ever endorse one of those stupid Beauty Blenders.

I tried out my new contour routine this morning, and aimed for something much more subtle, because I was heading to work…

(Some pictures with natural lighting!)

TA-FREAKING-DA. Subtle contour! Whose face is dirty and muddy now, Mom? (Just kidding, love you Mom!)

I recommend this product. Highly.

It’s easy to use, blendable, buildable, and honestly, if *I* can get bomb results out of it…so can you!

Tutorial coming soon.

(After I get tired of taking Snapchat selfies…kidding!)

    1. They have a light shade, I use medium! I’m NC20, so I’m a light beige kinda complexion, and usually light products match me… so strange that NYX’s medium matches me in this case! I think the light shade would be perfect for you, if you’re pale.
