This post was originally supposed to be a recipe post about Vietnamese-style hot pot… but then it sat in my drafts for a week. And now I’m at the point where I’ve eaten hot pot six days in a row….
It’s quickly become a favorite of my friends because it is inexpensive to make and sooo delicious! Here’s what we use.
I tweaked the traditional recipe my parents gave me, and gave it a modern twist and adapted it for me and my friends!
Broth/base
- Tom yum paste (Vietnamese hot pot specific)
- Chili garlic paste or sriracha
- Chopped up cilantro
- Lime juice
- Chicken broth
- Butter (just a pat!)
The dippings
- Noodles
- Spinach
- Mushrooms
- Sliced thin beef
- Shrimp
- Chicken
- Broccoli
- Thinly sliced potatoes
- Tofu
Dipping sauce
- Hoisin sauce
- Sriracha or garlic chili paste
We’ve made it at least four times.
I have seemed to have lost count.
It’s definitely a social dish and a fun dish to enjoy! All you do is boil your base in a hot pot and leave it boiling and add things as you go… it’s really just that simple.
I have a specific hot pot that I use that stays plugged in and sits at our kitchen table.
I definitely love sharing traditions with my friends, but even more… I love creating new ones.
What’s your favorite social dish?
Looks so good minus the mushrooms!!

I know right! They’re probably one of my favorite veggies if not the one! 🙂
